The Importance of Certification and Traceability on Indonesia’s Fishery Products

On 3rd Bali Tuna Conference held in Bali which took place on 31 May - 1 June 2018, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti stated the importance of certification and traceability on Indonesian Fishery Products, particularly Tuna, could rise the competitiveness of Indonesia’s fish trading in international market.

“Fish traders of the world should be able to maintain traceability and certification because without them, the trading could be very difficult, even could be impossible to happen,” explained Susi.

In Bali Tuna Conference, Indonesia also stated on their refusal in fishery activities which involves human rights violations in it. Fishery products have to be clean from any slavery and uphold the human rights.

The Government of Indonesia has a commitment and consistency to support the conservation and management of Tuna resources through Fish Resource Management Plan on Tuna, Skipjack (Cakalang), and Cob (Tongkol). This commitment has been stated since the first Bali Tuna Conference and since then stipulated by the Decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia Number 107 in 2015.

National tuna management and Framework for Harvest The strategy aims to realize sustainable tuna fisheries management for the welfare of fisheries communities. In addition, it also supports the realization of national food sovereignty, sustainable supply of fish protein and increased fishermen income as well as the provision of employment opportunities on board fishing vessels and fish processing units including other supporting industries which are the national ideals of the Indonesian government as the maritime axis of the world.
