Indonesian Patin Industry Goes International

Patin is one of the family members of Catfish. This fish is originally from Southeast Asia. It can be found in rivers and lakes of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and others.

Patin shape similar to catfish. The meat characteristics are fresh, tender, no small thorns or fishbones and its dat has a wonderful aroma.

In Indonesia, patin is one of the best commodities since it has a good establishment in hatchery, food, and cultivation.

Sumatera area help around 68,07% of patin in Indonesia with South Sumatera contribute 47,23% of it. Indonesian government supporting this industry by giving around Rp 7 billions for cultivation programs.

The potential number of patin imported to other countries increased every year. China imported 34.400 ton/year of patin. US number of imported patin also increasing by 12,3%. Thus, Indonesia potential in patin international market has widen.

Since that, Indonesia made policies to protect patin industry and it leads to the growth of number in patin’s import from 339.069 tons in 2015 to 437.111 tons of patins in 2016. Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries projected 604.587 tons of patin by 2018.

The number of patin consumptions in Indonesia are also increasing in 2014 - 2017 around 21,9% and counting each year. These represent approximately 76% of fresh patin and 15% frozen fish/frozen patin.
